Central Manitoulin Community Profile

The Municipality of Central Manitoulin is a progressive community that provides quality services. We have well maintained infrastructure and support economic development.

The Municipality has a variety of services and projects that promote economic development. The Community Improvement Program offers renovation and expansion grant, loan opportunities to businesses. Other programs respond to local business property investment needs. These include fixed roof accommodations and housing investment.

Continued investment into beautification and recreation makes our communities more attractive. Recent investment includes:

  • Enhancement Wagg’s Woods Trail, a 42-acre park in Mindemoya.
  • Attracting recreation opportunities like an inflatable waterpark.
  • Upgrades to the boardwalk and adding a dog park at Providence Bay Beach.
  • Recent efforts have also attracted film investment in the area.
  • Tourism strategic planning, signage strategies and culinary tourism initiatives all contribute to prosperity.

We have a vibrant community life with large annual festivals to small community picnics. There’s always a community event coming up. These events make Central Manitoulin one of the best places to live, work and invest in.

Cellular Service

Central Manitoulin has cellular coverage by all the major Canadian Providers. Providers include Rogers Wireless, Bell Mobility, Freedom Mobile and Telus Mobility.

Fire Department

The volunteer fire department fire halls are Providence Bay, Spring Bay, Mindemoya, and Sandfield. 

Health Care

The Municipality of Central Manitoulin has first class healthcare services. Services include:

  • Manitoulin Health Centre - Mindemoya Site
  • Mindemoya Medical Pharmacy
  • Mindemoya Dental Centre
  • Paramedic Ambulance Station - Mindemoya

Internet and Phone

Eastlink provides internet and landline phone service to Manitoulin Island. The town of Mindemoya has Eastlink fibre internet. Rural areas have access to Eastlink DSL. There are four options for internet. Eastlink, Starlink and Xplorenet or a cellular system.

Policing

Manitoulin Island has one large modern Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) station in Little Current, ON with a sub office in Gore Bay, ON. Central Manitoulin is regularly patrolled by the OPP.

Roads

The Municipality of Central Manitoulin has 440 lane km of roads.

Ontario Provincial Roads The main roads within the Municipality are Ontario Highways 542 and 551. The Provincial roads maintained by Emcon Services Inc. are under contract with the Ontario Provincial Government. The 24/7 Road Reporting Line for Ontario Roads is 1-844-362-6615.

Water and Sewer

Water and sewer systems were constructed in the village of Mindemoya in 1996. The water intake plant is on the east shore of Lake Mindemoya and the sewage treatment plant is to the south of the village at Mud Lake. Six-inch water and ten-inch sewer mains service Mindemoya except for the Hodgins-Nelder subdivision. The system is currently running under capacity with much room available for expansion. The Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA) currently maintains the system.

Water Rates

  1. For the year 2023, the annual flat rate fee for each Residential water unit in the Village of Mindemoya shall be $208.00 per quarter.
  2. For the year 2023:
  3. The quarterly minimum fee for each Commercial water customer in the Village of Mindemoya shall be $208.00.
  4. In addition to clause 2(a), each meter shall be read quarterly and any usage will be billed at the rates established as follows:
  5. 0 - 75 cubic meters billed in accordance with clause 2(a)
  6. 76 - 250 cubic meters $0.868

III. 251 - 400 cubic meters $0.924

  1. 401 – more $0.308

Sewer Rates

  1. For the year 2023, the annual flat rate fee for each Residential sewer unit in the Village of Mindemoya shall be $208.00 per quarter.\
  2. For the year 2023:
  3. The quarterly minimum fee for each Commercial sewer customer in the Village of Mindemoya shall be $208.00.
  4. In addition to clause 4(a), Commercial sewer customer shall be billed quarterly and any usage will be billed using the same consumption rates as water at the rates established as follows:
  5. 0 - 75 cubic meters billed in accordance with clause 4(a)
  6. 76 - 250 cubic meters $0.868

III. 251 - 400 cubic meters $0.924

  1. 401 – more $0.308
