Municipal Freedom of Information and Privacy Act
The Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA) applies to local government institutions in Ontario, including municipalities, police service boards, school boards, conservation authorities, boards of health and transit commissions. The Act requires that local government institutions protect the privacy of an individual’s personal information existing in government records. It also gives individuals the right to request access to municipal government information, including most general records and records containing their own personal information.
The Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario (IPC) is responsible for MFIPPA. The Commissioner is appointed by and reports to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, and is independent of the government of the day. The function of the office is to uphold and promote open government and the protection of personal privacy in Ontario.
