Waste Management Master Plan
In 2022, the Municipality facilitated a long-term waste management planning process with residents. The final report and additional information on the process can be viewed at: https://www.centralmanitoulin.ca/content/waste-management-master-plan
NOTICE TO RESIDENTS: UPCOMING CHANGES TO SOLID WASTE COLLECTION AND DEPOT SERVICES – EFFECTIVE JUNE 1st, 2023
As of June 1, 2023 the Municipality of Central Manitoulin will be moving to full-export of waste. This means that garbage deposited curbside as well as garbage taken to either the Big Lake Transfer Station or the Providence Bay site will now be deposited in bins and hauled to the Dodge Landfill in Espanola, rather than being deposited into our Municipally owned and operated site.
The Municipality wishes to assure residents that curbside and depot services will continue, and the level of service in 2023 will remain consistent with what is currently offered. However, some program changes will be necessary to manage the upcoming shift to full export.
As of June 1st, 2023 the following changes will be implemented:
- Bag limits for curbside pick-up.
- Implementation of a bag tag system.
- Temporary suspension of acceptance of large loads of construction & demolition waste (11+ cubic yards or more will no longer accepted).
- Increases to tipping fees for some items such as small loads of construction and demolition waste, clean brush & wood, and bulky items.
- Mandatory recycling and the mandatory use of clear bags continue to be in effect. Improperly separated loads or bags may be rejected. No Bag tags are required for recyclables.
- Bags of recyclables do not require a bag tag.
Curbside
As of June 1st, 2023 we will be introducing a bag tag program and bag limits at curbside, as follows:
Residential curbside waste: 2 bag limit (no bag tags required for the first two bags). 40 lbs per bag and size maximum of 30” x 38”. Clear bags required. 2 additional bags will be permitted per week to a total of 4 at curbside, however the additional two bags must each be tagged with a bag tag.
Bag tags cost $3.50 per tag and will be available to purchase at the Municipal Office or at the Transfer station site.
Commercial curbside waste: 8 bag limit (no bag tags required, no additional bags permitted at curbside). 40 lbs per bag and size maximum of 30”x38”. Clear bags required.
Recycling is mandatory and must be separated from waste. There are no bag tags required for recyclables and there are no bag limits for recyclables.
Commercial entities using front end bins for curbside service should contact the Municipality at 705-377-5726
